Eye-tracking research found chunking a route into short blocks of 2–4 handholds was the most effective way for climbers to adapt to a difficult route. Try previewing your next route as 3–4 ordered mini-sequences instead of hold-by-hold.

Expert climbers recall more information and group it into functional clusters (how holds will be used), while less experienced climbers mostly recall structural features (shape, color). When inspecting a route, name each hold by its use — pull, push, match, foothold — rather than its appearance.

Elite climbers outperform non-climbers on visual field tests, while visual acuity and contrast sensitivity show no difference. Peripheral awareness is trainable — practise scanning the wall above and to the sides without moving your head.

A randomized controlled trial in climbers found that a brief self-compassion intervention significantly reduced somatic anxiety compared to control — useful before hard redpoints or competitions when nerves show up in the body. Such a self-compassion exercise has also been shown to improve self-criticism and concern over mistakes in other athletes.

In a cross-sectional study of Swiss elite athletes, higher self-compassion was associated with fewer sleep-disorder symptoms, partly mediated by better satisfaction of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness). If your sleep has been ragged, tracking it daily (DCCASP) alongside a self-compassion practice may help — the two work on complementary levers.

Mental fatigue impairs endurance performance. Doing a demanding cognitive task right before training can lower output in a single session, but repeating Brain Endurance Training ~4×/week for 5 weeks has been shown to roughly double endurance gains compared to physical training alone. A 2026 meta-analysis (Yu et al.) and narrative review for elite sport (Joseph et al., 2026) confirm BET improves both aerobic and strength endurance. The main benefit appears as the brain nears its fatigue threshold: BET enhances motor control and fatigue tolerance via improved neural efficiency under stress — VanHaitsma et al. (2023) show reduced EMG activity during time-to-exhaustion, suggesting the CNS maintains output with lower neural drive. Late in long competitions, traditional training keeps you going while non-fatigued; BET is the edge that delays central fatigue and preserves motor efficiency under extreme conditions. Use it as a separate block, not as a warm-up.

Perceived exertion can impact endurance performance, disconnected from actual physical capacity. Untapped reserves may be accessible, as suggested by a broad body of research, including this study where tricking athletes by presenting a lower readout led to increased performance!

A systematic review and meta-analysis of goal-setting in sport found that process goals — the actions, techniques, or strategies that underlie a performance or outcome — appear to be the most effective goal type for enhancing performance, relative to performance and outcome goals. Process goals are also the ones you have the most control over: they're the daily / weekly / monthly executable steps you can actually do. Even without a specific performance target, focusing on process ("sleep ≥ 8 h," "eat a good meal the night before hard days," "hydrate on schedule during activity," "do the mobility work") sets you up for success. The same review found self-referenced goals (process, performance, mastery — framed vs your own past self) often lead to positive outcomes, whereas goals based on normative comparisons ("beat athlete X") do not improve performance and result in some maladaptive psychological outcomes.

In a study of rock climbers, grit (perseverance and passion for long-term goals) — especially the perseverance-of-effort facet — was associated with higher climbing ability, over and above broader personality traits. Other work on athletic slumps shows gritty athletes are more likely to keep training quality high and re-engage with long-term goals during prolonged performance dips. Take 2 minutes to score yours and revisit it across a season.

Anxiety has two faces. Cognitive worry typically impairs performance, and somatic anxiety (racing heart, shaky hands, tight breath) can impede it too. But on a controlled on-sight lead climb, more experienced climbers tended to interpret elevated somatic arousal as facilitative — useful energy for the route — rather than as a threat. The practical move isn't to chase low arousal; it's to label what you feel ("this is fuel") and use a brief grounding routine, then climb. An expertise study on indoor rock climbing reported that skilled climbers rated themselves less confident about their action capabilities than less-skilled climbers — but their estimates matched what they could actually do far more closely. Calibration beats bravado: instead of psyching yourself up to high confidence, practise honest self-prediction ("can I latch that hold from this body position, yes/no?") before each attempt, and check it after. Over time, this tightens the gap between belief and behaviour, which is what the Challenge vs Threat appraisal work targets.

In Olympic bouldering, strategic planning during preview predicts performance — and the size of a climber's movement repertoire is what makes that planning effective. Climbers with broader repertoires (more remembered solutions to similar problems) decide faster, choose more efficient beta, and manage the 4-minute clock better. Two converging studies recommend deliberately growing your repertoire — including by route-setting yourself — rather than only redpointing a narrow style. Try pinning a small set of unfamiliar move shapes as drills.

The Mindfulness–Acceptance–Commitment (MAC) approach reframes performance anxiety: perfectionism and worry function as ineffective attempts at emotion regulation — fighting unwanted thoughts and feelings — and that struggle is itself what produces the negative subjective and behavioural outcomes athletes try to avoid. MAC trains noticing, accepting, and committing to values-aligned action while the unpleasant internal state is still present, instead of waiting for it to go away. Try the 7-module protocol when arousal-down strategies aren't holding.

Endurance runners systematically shift between associative focus (breathing, cadence, effort) and dissociative focus (music, scenery, mind-wandering). Elite performers use associative focus when it matters most — hard efforts, hills, race-pace segments — and dissociative focus to conserve mental resources when the effort is submaximal. Naming your current focus after a session (via post-session thought probes) helps you notice when attention drifted and choose deliberately next time.

The Short Recovery and Stress Scale (SRS) captures overall recovery and stress in four dimensions each. Repeated use across a season sensitises athletes to the early signs of accumulating load, so hard sessions land on days you're actually recovered rather than on a calendar. Kellmann & Kölling's validation work shows the SRS tracks changes across training microcycles and taper periods.

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) recovers a heart-rate signal from tiny colour changes in the skin captured by a normal camera. Modern algorithms (POS, CHROM) reach clinically-useful HR accuracy in controlled conditions; open toolboxes benchmark these methods head-to-head. Impacted by ambient lighting and movement, but useful in the absence of a smartwatch or chest strap! Trends and day-to-day deviation are more informative than any single reading.

Acoustic parameters of speech — jitter, shimmer, fundamental frequency, energy — shift measurably under physical fatigue and psychological stress. A 20-second reading, tracked over weeks, reveals patterns that are easy to miss subjectively (voice tightens before you notice you're tense). Use it as a low-friction check when a fingertip or selfie reading isn't practical.

Under time pressure, better decision-makers gather more information before committing (Information Sampling), tolerate longer delays for larger rewards (Delay Discounting), and resist the pull of the first plausible answer (Reflection–Impulsivity / SODT-R). These traits are trainable and predict in-sport judgement — from beta selection on a boulder to shot selection in a match. Repeat these tasks quarterly to see your own drift.

Hanin's Individual Zone of Optimal Functioning (IZOF) model shows that peak performance happens inside a personal band of emotional intensity — not the same for everyone, and not the same for every emotion. Anxiety may be facilitative for one athlete at moderate intensity but debilitative at high intensity, while excitement follows a different curve. Repeated IZOF check-ins across training and competition let you map your own band so you can dial in with breathing, cue-words, or activation on the day.

Brandstätter and colleagues showed that marathon runners entering an action-crisis (doubting whether to keep pursuing a goal) are much more likely to underperform or drop out. The ACRISS scale surfaces the crisis window before it derails training. When results show up, respond with a values-check and, if needed, a goal recalibration — not more volume.

Killgore's review of sleep-deprivation and cognition documents that even one night of restricted sleep degrades risk assessment, impulse control, and updating of previously learned rules — the same cognitive machinery you rely on for pacing, beta changes, and in-competition tactics. Coping Effectiveness Training (CET) reframes stressors by first asking a single question: is this changeable? Changeable stressors call for problem-focused coping (plan, act, ask); unchangeable ones call for emotion-focused coping (reframe, accept, connect). Chesney et al.'s randomised trial showed CET reduced perceived stress and burnout by training that triage as a habit. Athletes can apply it to injury, selection, weather, or a bad training block equally.

Lehrer & Gevirtz's resonance-frequency work shows that paced breathing near ~6 breaths/min maximises HRV amplitude by aligning respiration with baroreflex oscillations, producing measurable autonomic recovery effects and improved emotion regulation. Combined with an interoception cue ("notice the breath at the ribs"), a short daily practice builds the down-regulation skill you need pre-attempt or between sets.
